Short Bios

Danielle Radovich Piper

Danielle Radovich Piper oversees external relations in the Office of the President and for CU’s system administration. She has extensive experience in government relations, public policy and constituent engagement. She is responsible for coordinating and advancing external efforts for the four-campus university system in communications, marketing, government relations, fundraising support operations, and outreach and engagement. Radovich Piper also works closely with the president on strategic vision and the Board of Regents in addressing shared priorities with the administration.

She manages CU’s systemwide marketing efforts, collaborating with colleagues on all four campuses to craft messages and create campaigns that convey the value of a CU degree, the individual and collective strengths of each campus, and the contributions CU makes to Colorado, the country and world.

Before coming to CU, Radovich Piper served for 16 years as chief of staff for Colorado Congressman Ed Perlmutter, who retired from Congress in January 2023. Before serving as Rep. Perlmutter’s chief of staff, Radovich Piper was chief of staff for the Senate Majority in the Colorado General Assembly. She was also an associate at a Denver-based public affairs firm. She has been appointed to several state-level entities, including the Supreme Court Nominating Commission and the Census Outreach Grant Committee.

Radovich Piper is a life-long Coloradan and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Colorado State University. She and her husband, Chris, have two children. 

 

Judi Diaz Bonacquisti, EdD (she/her)

For more than 25 years Dr. Judi Diaz Bonacquisti has developed programs and policies to expand college access and advance students toward college degree completion, particularly students of color, first-generation students, undocumented students, and students from low-income backgrounds. Diaz Bonacquisti has served at public and private colleges and universities with a range of academic offerings, admissions selectivity, and populations. She has served as Senior Student Affairs Officer, Senior Enrollment Officer, and Senior Diversity Officer.

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, Diaz Bonacquisti holds a Doctor of Education in Leadership for Educational Equity from the University of Colorado Denver, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University. She is honored to serve in the Office of the President for the University of Colorado as Senior Diversity Officer.

Waleed Abdalati, PhD
Director, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)

Waleed Abdalati is Director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU-Boulder). Scientists and students at CIRES conduct research that focuses on understanding the physical, chemical, biological, and social aspects of the Earth’s environment. Dr. Abdalati is also a Professor in CU-Boulder’s Geography Department. His own research focuses on the use of satellites and aircraft to understand how Earth's glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice are changing and the implications of those changes for the Earth System. Dr. Abdalati spent 14 years working for NASA in various research and leadership capacities, most recently as NASA Chief Scientist. In this role, he advised the NASA Administrator on matters related to NASA’s science programs and strategic planning and served as the key NASA science interface to the White House, Congress, and federal agencies.  Dr. Abdalati earned a B.S. from Syracuse University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from CU-Boulder.

 

Yonca Ertimur, PhD

Yonca Ertimur is the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research and the Tandean Rustandy Esteemed Professor at the Leeds School of Business. Prior to her current role, Professor Ertimur served as the Acting Dean of the Leeds School of Business and as the Chair of the Accounting Division. She earned her Ph.D. at New York University in 2003 and was on the faculty at Duke University and Stanford University before joining Leeds.

Professor Ertimur taught financial accounting and graduate seminars at Leeds. She received the MBA Teaching Excellence Award in 2015 and 2017. Professor Ertimur’s research focuses on corporate governance and the impact of direct monitoring by shareholders via shareholder voting. She also studies the production and disclosure of information by firms. She currently serves an Editor at the Review of Accounting Studies and an Associate Editor at the Journal of Accounting Research.

 

Dr. David Korevaar

Award winning pianist David Korevaar, Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado, has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. Korevaar's active career includes performances with the Rochester Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Japan’s Shonan Chamber Orchestra, Brazil’s Goiania Symphony, and with acclaimed conductors Guillermo Figueroa, Per Brevig, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and Jorge Mester. A founding member of the Boulder Piano Quartet, he also performs regularly with the Takács Quartet. 

Korevaar’s extensive discography of over 50 titles includes world premiere recordings of piano music by Luigi Perrachio, as well as works by Reza Vali, Paul Juon, Liebermann, Tibor Harsányi, Dohnányi, Louis Aubert, Jean Roger-Ducasse, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Fauré, Ravel, Hindemith, and Chopin. Future recording projects include the Sonatas of Beethoven.

Of special interest, he has concertized and given master classes in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan and taught at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) in Kabul.

 

Leslie Leinwand, PhD

Dr. Leinwand is a Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) Distinguished Professor and Chief Scientific Officer of the BioFrontiers Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research laboratory focuses on the genetics and molecular physiology of inherited diseases of the heart and particularly how biological sex affects the heart in health and disease. She co-founded Myogen, Inc. (acquired by Gilead Pharmaceuticals), Hiberna, Inc., and MyoKardia, Inc. (acquired by Bristol Myers Sqibb), which develop therapeutics for inherited cardiomyopathies. She is a Fellow of the AAAS, a former MERIT Awardee of the NIH, an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy for Inventors. 

 

Johanna B. Maes, PhD

Johanna B. Maes, Ph.D., is an Associate Teaching Professor and the Director of the Master of Arts in Higher Education Program and the Director of the Multicultural Leadership Scholars Program at the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education. She has held leadership roles in K-12, the non-profit sector and in higher education, all in Colorado, for the past 25 years. Her research and teaching expertise is grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion and gender issues in higher education leadership. She has co-authored numerous academic articles on race and equity in higher education and has co-edited two books focusing on women of color leaders in academia and intersectionality in higher education. Dr. Maes is a proud first-generation college student from Pueblo, CO, and has been a student, staff, and faculty member at CU-Boulder.

 

Shelly Miller, PhD

Dr. Shelly L. Miller is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and faculty in the Environmental Engineering Program at the University of Colorado Boulder, holding an M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College.  Dr. Miller studies urban air quality and works diligently to understand the impact of air pollution on public health and the environment. She is an expert on indoor environmental quality, airborne infectious disease transmission, air pollution and air cleaning technologies, and assessing and mitigating urban air pollution exposures in underserved communities. Dr. Miller is a member of the Academy of Fellows of the International Society for Indoor Air and Climate (ISIAQ) and is also an Associate Editor for Environmental Science and Technology. Dr. Miller has published over 100 peer reviewed articles on air quality including timely papers on COVID-19 transmission and control and is the principal investigator on the National Science Foundation’s Social Justice and Environmental Equity Project in Denver (www.SJEQDenver.com). 

 

Jun Ye, PhD

Jun Ye is a Fellow of JILA, a Fellow of NIST, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the development of new tools for light-matter interactions and their applications in precision measurement, quantum science, and frequency metrology. He has co-authored over 400 scientific papers and delivered 600 invited talks. Among his awards and honors are five Gold Medals from the US Commerce Department, N.F. Ramsey Prize (APS), I.I. Rabi Award (IEEE), I.I. Rabi Prize (APS), and W.F. Meggers Award (OSA).  His recent honors include Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, Niels Bohr Institute Medal of Honour, Herbert Walther Award, and Vannevar Bush Fellowship. CU Boulder Dean

Lori Bergen, PhD

Lori Bergen is the founding dean of CU Boulder’s first new college in more than 50 years, leading the charge for an interdisciplinary approach to media, communication and information education that is enriched by data and immersive technologies. The longest serving dean on the Boulder campus, she serves as secretary of the board of directors for Colorado Public Radio and is a member of the board of the Colorado Press Association. Bergen is also a trustee of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and a member of the Arthur Page Society. A former journalist, she has been a faculty member and served in academic leadership roles at Kansas State, Texas State and Marquette universities and is the former president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She is co-author of several books, including News for Us: Citizen-Centered Journalism, and holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University.

Jasimine Evans

Jasimine Evans has lived from coast to coast in the US as a Military dependent. Her work has revolved around DE&I, development, learning communities, and crisis response. As a First-Generation student, Jasimine completed her undergraduate career at the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She gained her Master of Education in Counseling-Student Affairs at Northern Arizona University. Jasimine has been involved with shared governance and various university initiatives. She is committed to the success of students, staff and faculty, service-learning, and overall bringing voices to the table that may be missing.

 

Teresa Hernández
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Recruitment Program Manager

Teresa is a multi-generation Colorado native with migrant farmworker parents from the San Luis Valley. Both parents were activists at CU during the Chicano movement, and both worked at CU.  Her dad was a Custodian/Security Guard, and her mom was a Counselor undertaking inclusivity work at CU for 40 years. Teresa and her partner continue this legacy as alumni and staff at CU.

Teresa's work has focused on advocating for underrepresented communities both within the nonprofit and educational realm. Since 2006, her campus career has focused on making excellence inclusive in both Student Affairs and Human Resources.

Her area of expertise includes advocacy for students and inclusive recruitment for staff and faculty. It is important to her that others feel heard, respected, and valued as a student, staff, faculty, and/or community member in order for people to have meaningful experiences while on campus.

 

Medford A. Moorer, Jr.

Medford Moorer is the Assistant Dean of Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff, in the College of Engineering & Applied Science, where he leads organizational strategy across multiple departments, functions, decisions, and operations to enable the college to achieve its strategic goals. Medford leads the implementation and tracking of college strategic planning efforts, and strategies that drive business process and workforce improvements. Medford supports critical strategic initiatives relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Medford is responsible for fostering relationships with key campus and business leaders, and external partners to amplify the college voice and to deliver against current and future needs.

Medford also served as the Manager of Diversity and Inclusion Operations at Ball Corporation where he led the implementation and execution of global and regional DEI initiatives, where he translated diversity strategies into well-defined projects with focused deliverables while shaping and integrating DEI within all business policies, procedures, and processes. Currently, Medford is in the process of completing an Ed.D. in Education, Leadership for Educational Equity.

Chase Cromwell

Chase Cromwell is a senior studying Political Science with minors in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) and Leadership Studies. He currently serves as the External Affairs Tri-Executive for CU Student Government (CUSG) and has held leadership roles in CUSG throughout his time at CU Boulder. He graduated from Lamar High School and Lamar Community College in 2020. After a year at another institution, Chase transferred to CU Boulder where he focused on student advocacy. Last year, much of this work took place at the Boulder City Council and Colorado State Legislature where he worked for housing reform and other local needs. As a deaf student, Chase has worked to elevate the needs of students with disabilities in policy, DEI, and other social spaces wherever possible.

 

Ash Ganzoury

Ash Ganzoury lived, studied and worked in North America, Europe and Africa undertaking different business development, entrepreneurial and leadership roles. He speaks three languages and holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture Engineering and an MBA in Aviation Management. Ash has been in innovation incubators, and both a self-leadership and sports-parachuting coach at the International Air Transport Association and the Universities of South Florida and Geneva.

Currently, he is a doctoral student at CU’s Leeds School of Business, working towards his PhD in Management and Business Administration with a specialization in Psychology. His research focuses on Environmental, Social and Academic Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Actively engaged in academia and the community, he serves as the elected President of Outreach of CU Boulder’s Graduate and Professional Student Government. Ash is driven by a passion to assist individuals and organizations in discovering their true potential and their path of least resistance.

Ceal Barry

Ceal Barry was the Head Basketball Coach at the University of Colorado Boulder from 1983 to 2005, retiring as the winningest coach in university history. Following her coaching career, she moved into Athletics administration at CU. She served in numerous roles, most notably as the department’s Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. AS SWA, she led a campus-wide committee authoring the department’s Five-Year Gender Equity Plan, a template for Title IX compliance for the department. Ceal served as the department’s Interim Athletics Director during the summer of 2013. She has served on numerous search committees, including Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Athletics Director, among others. She retired from the university in 2020.

For work, David is co-managing partner of Foster Graham Milstein & Calisher, LLP. David’s legal practice focuses predominantly on land use law, as well as state and local governmental affairs issues. To those who know David, they consider him uniquely adept at bringing parties with seemingly disparate interests to common ground. David is a six-time 5280 Top Lawyer recipient, a 2023 Super Lawyer, and was selected as 2024 Best Lawyer in America for Land Use and Zoning Law.

David is committed to charitable and civic causes and has been involved with many organizations in leadership roles, including Colorado Mesa University, Shwayder Camp of Congregation Emanuel, Denver Jewish Day School, George Washington High School IB Foundation, Rose Community Foundation, Jewish Colorado, and more.

Charles is a proud Colorado native and advocate for change and innovation. He served as an appointee for Mayor Michael B. Hancock in the City and County of Denver. His scope included being a bridge between governmental branches and Denver metro regional partners; additionally, he drove projects that impacted $3.65B of capital expenditures, was the co-site Director for the COVID19 unhoused shelter operations, and many other duties. Charles serves on several boards, is a gubernatorial appointed commissioner, and is a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Charles’ beloved alma mater is the University of Colorado at Boulder where he studied Business Administration and Leadership. Most importantly, Charles is a proud husband to Rikki and father to Liliana and his son Charles IV. His hobbies include listening to Presidential Primaries, reading, learning foreign languages, and volunteering on ranches working with horses.

 

Tanya Mares Kelly Bowry

Tanya is President and Lobbyist for Policy Matters with three decades of experience in politics. She is renowned for her relationships, institutional knowledge, and expertise. She began her career in the Colorado State Senate and then went on to lobby at the Colorado General Assembly for over twenty years, while simultaneously advocating in Washington, D.C for 10 years. Tanya retired from the University of Colorado after 22 years where she was serving as the Vice President of Government Relations. She earned her bachelor’s degree in International Affairs and Political Science at CU Boulder, has a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from Regis University as a Colorado Trust Fellow, and studied at

Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as a member of the senior executives in state and local government. She is now serving as a Regional Council Member on the El Pomar Foundation. She currently resides in Westminster, Colorado with her husband Chris and two daughters, Skylar and Jayden.

 

Jeremy May

Jeremy is Founder and CEO of Paralel Technologies, a FinTech company in the asset management industry.  Prior to founding Paralel, Jeremy spent 24 years as President of ALPS Fund Services and ALPS Distributors.  Before joining ALPS, Jeremy was an auditor with Deloitte where he earned his CPA.  Jeremy serves as an independent director on a number of investment company boards including Russell Funds.  Passionate about philanthropy, Jeremy currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the University of Colorado Foundation, as a Trustee of the A.V. Hunter Trust, the oldest private foundation in Colorado, and on the advisory board of the Renee Crown Wellness Institute at the University of Colorado.  Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Colorado.

 

Rosemary Rodriguez

Retired, State Director for Senator Michael Bennet

After retiring from government service in 2017, Rosemary Rodriguez founded Together We Count, an effort to increase participation by Colorado’s hard-to-count communities in the 2020 Census. 

Rodriguez’s career in government included eight years as the State Director for United States Senator Michael F. Bennet. While working for Bennet, she was elected to the Denver Public Schools Board of Education in 2013.  In 2007, she was appointed by President George W. Bush to the United States Election Assistance Commission, elected to the Denver City Council in 2003, and in 1996, appointed by Mayor Wellington E. Webb as Clerk and Recorder for the City and County of Denver.  Rodriguez also chaired the 2001 Colorado Reapportionment Commission, a constitutional body responsible for redrawing legislative districts after the Census. Rosemary is a Colorado native and attended Metropolitan State College (now Metropolitan State University), where she studied Political Science.
